INTERLUDE

Noreen could not forgive herself for failing to recognize him sooner. How could a woman who dreamed as she did walk right by her soul mate and not see him? True, Rusty always stood in Bodey Landrum’s shadow though he was the taller of the two. Bodey had the kind of looks and reputation the Mt. Carmel students drooled over onto their pristine, white parochial school blouses. Rumor said Bodey could get a girl out of one of those blouses in under fifteen seconds regardless of the fact that Mt. Carmel debs supposedly dated only St. Leo guys—not young cowboys with wicked blue eyes.

Who was Rusty Niles? Only Renee’s poor cousin, red-haired, freckled, quiet around the female sex. He bore no resemblance to dashing Rufe Courville at all except in stature, but she should have looked closer and seen those whiskey-colored eyes gazing at her. Russ hadn’t recognized her either, claimed he still didn’t. Of course, she was no Espy Niles with a cinched-in waist and romantic full-skirted gowns, but again, her eyes were the same, big and brown. They should have seen him standing there, waiting. The times of mannerly, ardent young men and graceful, chaste ladies of eighteen had vanished. Even the well-educated and rich could be crass and crude when it came to love. Virginity no longer had any value, and no one pined forever. People now moved on, got over it.

She’d never said a word to Rusty before that party and was scared stiff to talk to Bodey Landrum. What if she had gone into the barn that night with Bodey instead of being pushed on Russ? What if she had failed to discern the gentleman inside the cowboy? Would she have had to wait another hundred plus years to find her lost love and end the family feud?
